Officials lighted the lantern for the first time in 1870 and built a two-story Gothic dwelling large enough to house four Light-keepers and their families. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake damaged the tower beyond repair, so engineers rebuilt the sentinel with reinforced concrete instead of brick to withstand strong tremors.
